Social Action - Staying in The Loop at the RAF Museum

Over 80 people came along to the upcycling session at the RAF Museum on Saturday 17 February. They tried handy upcycling techniques like stencilling and decoupage for themselves, guided by the knowledgeable and skilful staff and volunteers of The Loop @ Grahame Park, a Groundwork London project. Volunteering Barnet organised the session as a Social Action opportunity, which had a really positive response from those who attended.

Super inclusive, engaging activities, warm and friendly staff, great cause. Had a tonne of fun! -- Ahmed, Idris and Ameerah

While getting inspiration to try things at home, people were simultaneously learning about the reuse services the Loop offers. As an added bonus, those that came just for the workshop could also explore the unique features of the RAF Museum.

The Loop at Grahame Park is a re-use hub on a housing estate in Barnet. They collect, store, repair and re-sell furniture to the local community. They also provide training and employment opportunities to local residents, and are keen to offer more opportunities to the wider community to raise local awareness about their services. The RAF Museum, meanwhile, is working to increase the number of visitors to the museum by offering more diverse activities that aren’t necessarily related to the features of the museum. The social action day was a great opportunity to bring the museum and the Loop together to meet both their needs.

Joe Sullivan, Heritage Outreach Officer at the RAF Museum, said: “The RAF Museum’s Historic Hendon project has given us some great opportunities to work with our local partners to reach out to a wide collective local audience. Having The Loop on site for the day was really valuable, giving local people a chance to showcase an incredible local project to a new audience. Visitors were incredibly positive and appreciative of the hard work and openness of the team from The Loop, and it would be a pleasure to work with them again in the future.”
